does “poster party” have any specific meaning?
if someone told me they were going to a “poster party” at new year’s what does that mean?
OK, you haven’t gotten a more authoritative answer, so I will give it my best shot.
In the US, many things are sold at home parties organized by representatives of the products being sold, but in people’s private homes. Some ladies use these as an excuse to get together, compare their home-made munchies, play some silly games, laugh together, and buy some stuff. Often it is stuff people would not otherwise buy much of.
It would seem perfectly logical if this marketing technique has invaded the collectibles market. A party would consist mostly of an excuse to exclaim over which actors you like in the movie posters, how many times you have watched that DVD, and how little you paid for that Avalon Ballroom poster back in 1969. Heck, you might have even got it for free from working in a bookstore where it was posted in the window.
So a poster party, then, would be a marketing technique for collectible posters. Johnny Depp fans beware.
